Facilitator Trainings

The trainings described below are for participants pursuing instructor status with the Cornell Team & Leadership Center or current facilitators seeking training in advanced skill areas. Description of Low Elements and Facilitation Training:

  • Introduce/ affirm the philosophy of Adventure Programming
  • Introduce/ affirm the processes of group assessment, sequencing adventure activities, framing, and debriefing skills
  • Teach and practice technical skills of safe operation of low elements including spotting and assists, and review the different types of low elements: traversing, swinging, lifting, and catching
  • Teach and review Hoffman Challenge Course Local Operating Procedures, including instructor responsibilities and emergency procedures
  • Build community among staff utilizing initiatives and the low challenge course

Description of High Element Skills Training:

  • Teach and review technical skills for safe operation of a high ropes course, including equipment, set up of elements, running activitiy, take down, and problem solving
  • Orient participants to HCC and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), instructor responsibilities, and emergency procedures
  • Model a learning community that is supportive and facilitates learning

Description of Tower Training:(prerequisite- currently on staff as a highs level 1 or level 2 facilitator, or 2-3 years experience in challenge course operations)

  • Teach and review technical skills necessary for safe operation of the HCC tower, including leading edge climbing, operation of the zip wire, rappelling, and giant swing
  • To teach and review emergency situations, quick departure of the tower in times of lighting and other severe weather

Description of Advanced Technical and Facilitation Skills:(prerequisite- currently on staff as a highs level 1 or level 2 facilitator, or 2- 3 years experiencein challenge course operations)

  • Teach and review gear retrieval systems
  • Teach and review rescue skills and emergency protocols
  • Teach and review facilitation techniques based on supplementary curriculum designs
